Authors: Raquel Sáenz Ortiz, Rebecca Ramirez and Laura Carrasco Torres Title: Centering Community in Fugitive Pedagogy: Pláticas with Chicana Ethnic Studies Teachers Abstract: Across the United States, educators in multiple states are grappling
with the impact of educational gag orders in social studies classrooms. In the
state of Texas, Senate Bill 3 (SB3), which went into effect in September 2021,
is an example of legislation that restricts pedagogy related to race, gender, and
civic education. This article highlights how four Chicana educators resist SB3 and
embody fugitive pedagogies, leveraging community in this process. These four
women are all Mexican American Studies (MAS) teachers in the San Antonio
area, each with over eight years of teaching experience. Pláticas serve as a guiding
methodology for co-constructing knowledge with these educators. This paper was
part of a broader study where twenty-eight K-12 ethnic studies teachers were
surveyed and pláticas were held with seventeen educators. These four women
emphasized a sense of community in their teaching practice, a factor that notably
impacted their experiences as ethnic studies teachers. Theorizing their pedagogies
as fugitive follows in the tradition of Black and Latinx resistance in and out of the
education system, resisting oppressive structures that impact communities of color.
In examining their enactment of fugitivity, three key themes are centered:
1) the centrality of identity and “collective memory,” 2) the importance of a
“MAS community,” and 3) the ability to resist without the fear of retaliation.

Authors: Hilda Cecilia Contreras Aguirre and Teresa Maria Linda Scholz Title: Elevando Nuestras ALAS/Soaring Our Wings: A Comadrismo and Acompañamiento Transformative Femtoring Praxis Abstract: Despite a dramatic increase in Hispanic Serving Institutions nationwide,
Latina/x faculty members, students, and staff continue to face equity gaps in a
higher education system that is largely Eurocentric and patriarchal, which poses
barriers to recruitment, retention, and completion. This essay focuses on the ALAS
Femtoring program created at a Hispanic Serving and Minority Serving Institution
on the Southwest Mexico/US borders for Latinas pursuing degrees in STEM fields
and draws on the testimonios and pláticas shared by a select group of Latina/x
faculty femtors who reflected on their interactions with their femtees. By analyzing
the testimonios, a comadrismo praxis was revealed as part of the femtoring process.
This comadrismo praxis, underlied by acompañamiento, had three corresponding
principles: paying it forward, sharing lived experiences, and normalizing lived
experiences. A comadrismo praxis rooted in transnational communication systems,
builds meaningful relationships among femtors and between femtors and femtees,
an aspect of femtoring that has not yet been fully explored. This femtoring approach
contributes to indicators of servingness and creates possibilities for material change.

Authors: Christen Sperry García, Leslie C Sotomayor and Kimberly Sandoval Title: Visual Pláticas: Chicana/Latina Creative Acts of Nepantlando Abstract: In response to las rajaduras (the gaps) in art education, we—three
Latinas from the U.S. southwest and Carribean borderlands—offer a methodology
and Latina/x-centered pedagogy of engaging in creative acts using Anzaldúan
theories. In this article, we conceptualize visual pláticas, which are informed by
the state of nepantla and the reflexivity fostered by autohistoria-teoría. Merging
art and writing, we offer a creative process called visual pláticas that merges art
and writing. As an expression of nepantlando methodology, visual pláticas are
creative acts that theorize our lived experiences. Visual pláticas help develop a
critical analysis and value the non-linear process of artmaking using autohistoriateoría.
We conceptualize nepantlando methodology to theorize and expand the
traditional conventions of artmaking, identifying visual artifacts that document and
enact nepantla, borderlands, autohistoria-teoría, and conocimiento for both creators
and viewers. We share our reflections on how visual pláticas activate nepantlando
through Chicana/Latina feminist-inspired post-oppositional and decolonial theories.
As nepantleras, the theorizing of nepantlando through visual pláticas supports a
feminist historical lineage of borderlands, Gloria Anzaldúa, and women of color
feminist epistemologies.

Author: Susana N Cruz-Ramírez Title: Nepantlerx Cosmologies: Mapping Chicanx and Indigenous Spiritual Activisms Abstract: This article examines the nuanced ways that Chicanx and/or Indigenous
peoples engage and embrace various forms of spiritual activist worldviews integral
to their larger political, personal, and communal work of decolonization. I reveal a
constellation of spiritual activism that is the amalgam of ancestral and embodied
ceremonial practices with social justice technologies. I introduce nepantlerx
cosmologies as a seemingly simple yet complex guide to describe interwoven
spiritual activisms that do not ignore or minimize the urgency of queer and landbased
experience towards collective liberation. To map these dynamic spiritual
activisms, I turn to the guiding metaphor of the cosmos—the infinite possibiliti es of
interconnected galaxies, continual planetary movements, the gravitational pull of
black holes, among other relevant cosmic illustrations to remap these topographies
and modalities of spiritual activism rooted unapologetically in Queer, Trans,
Indigequeer, and Two-Spirit existence.
